The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration will announce its final decision on Tuesday in territorial disputes over the South China Sea between China and the Philippines.
The Philippines unilaterally filed an arbitration case against China in January 2013, leading China’s refusal to be part of the arbitration.
Ahead of the July 12 ruling, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has voiced stern warning against the arbitral tribunal, saying that the ruling may cause serious damage to the international rule of law.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a written statement in June that the tribunal has no jurisdiction over the matter, as a declaration made by China in 2006 excludes disputes concerning maritime delimitation — among others — from arbitration and other compulsory dispute settlement procedures.
As the South China Sea issue has become a global headline, China Daily’s international team invited guests to have their say. Please stay tuned.
