American chemist Theresa Dankovich, in her 30s, was bestowed the Design Intelligence Award 2016 on Sunday in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, for her design called the “Drinkable Book”.
The book, which uses technologically advanced filter paper, is capable of ridding water of deadly waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid and making it potable.
The pages also contain information which reminds people about how to ensure that water is safe before it is consumed.
To use the book, people have to simply tear out a page, slide it into a filter box, and pour contaminated water through. What comes out is safe to drink.
Launched by the Zhejiang provincial government and the Hangzhou-based China Academy of Art, the annual Design Intelligence Award, is believed to be the world's most lucrative when it comes to industry design awards.
