Two Shanghai maths teachers took over the classroom at St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School in central London as part of an education exchange between the British Department for Education and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.

Chen Zhuhui, also known as “Mr Bean” by all his students, starts his Shanghai-style maths lesson with a mental arithmetic activity, inviting students to compete to answer questions as quickly as possible. The competition gets the students excited.

Despite some initial problems with the language difference, the lessons are a hit with the students, who find them challenging and fun.

British schools hope to reproduce the success of China’s maths teaching methods, and this exchange is at the forefront of the knowledge transfer.
