The Republic of Malawi joined the ranks of the 40 member countries of The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) on August 1, 2014, bringing the numbers of INBAR’s African member countries to 17.

At 11:00 am on Sept 3, Ernest M. Makawa, the Malawi ambassador to China, joined Dr. Hans Friederich, the Director General of INBAR, in raising the national flag of Malawi at INBAR headquarters in celebration of the country’s entry to INBAR.

Many joined Professor Jiang Zehui, the co-chair of the INBAR Board of Trustees, at the event to witness this memorable moment. They included ambassadors and diplomats to China from INBAR African member countries and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and State Forestry Administration of China. Also present were government trainees from Latin America, the Caribbean and the South Pacific who were at INBAR for a training course.

The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan is the first intergovernmental organization to be headquartered in China. Its member countries all over the world are dedicated to improving the well-being of the producers and users of bamboo and rattan within the context of a sustainable bamboo and rattan resource base.
