One of the world's most prestigious environmental prizes has been awarded to Sichuan Poor Rural-Household Biogas Development Program in Beijing on July 10.

Co-sponsored by UPM, Oasis and Sichuan Rural Energy Office, the biogas program provides renewable energy source in the form of an advanced biogas digester and utilization technology. Nearly one million poor farming households in China's southwest Sichuan province have benefited from the project. The biogas system collects methane from each household's manure, and transfers it for cooking, lighting and even heating. It is estimated that the program will reduce about 20 million tons of carbon dioxide.

The 2014 ENERGY GLOBE AWARD was presented to the program's representatives by Oskar Andesner, Austrian Commercial Counselor.

As one of the most well-known environmental prizes in the world, the award was founded in Austria back in 1999. It attracts nearly 1,000 project applications from more than 160 countries competing for the award. Each year one application from each of the countries is named the national winner, and then one entry is selected as the global winner among all the national winners.
