Mexico are football’s great underachievers, a country crazy for the beautiful game, where huge crowds flock to see the national team, and yet they so nearly missed out on a 2014 World Cup place. El Tri won the football gold medal of the 2012 Olympic Games, but needed the USA to beat Panama with a late goal on the final match day of World Cup qualifying, to secure a play-off with New Zealand.
