Greece are back for their third shot at the World Cup finals. But on the global stage, they have yet to taste anything like the success they had when winning Euro 2004. The Greeks finished second to Bosnia on goal difference in their qualifying group, but swept aside Romania 4-2 over two legs in the play-offs to reach Brazil, where they will face Columbia, Japan and Ivory Coast in Group C. Portuguese coach Fernando Santos led Greece to the finals with a team that kept things tight at the back, conceding just four goals in 10 matches while veteran Giorgos Karagounis remains a vital presence at the heart of midfield. Up front Fulham striker Konstantinos Mitroglou scored five times in qualifying and Greece will need more of the same if they are to reach the World Cup knockout stages for the first time.
