Zhao Yang: Adapting to the local life

Updated: 2014-06-05
By Huan CAO (chinadaily.com.cn)

Zhao Yang, 34 years old, established his own practice, Zhaoyang Architects, in 2007.

Zhao Yang's office is located in Dali. He has two partners, Li Ye and Wu Zhou. All three of them went abroad to study, and all returned to contribute what they learned.

Zhao is a man of few words, except when he talks about his work. Two of his buildings featured in the video were resort hotels. Both were impressive and unique, taking advantage of Dali's beautiful mountains and sea.

He uses local handicrafts in his designs, and gets personally immersed in the process. He believes that a hands-on approach, especially working closely with local builders and craftsmen, will bring buildings to life.

And it does: his work is unique and romantic.

The 14th International Architecture Exhibition takes place from 7 June to 23 November 2014 at the Giardini and Arsenale venues (Preview on 5 and 6 June) and in various other venues in Venice.

EMGdotART, a privately funded foundation, brings over 10 Chinese individuals and organizations to the exhibition to showcase the Chinese thoughts on this year’s theme: Fundamentals.

The exhibition is titled as "Adaptation: architecture and change in China" and the curators are Marino Folin & MovingCities.

Wang Shuo in Beijing, Zhao Yang in Dali and Ruan Hao in Hangzhou are three of the young elites.
