China and the nations of the European Union have a host of exciting issues to explore together, says Dr Franz Fischler, and combining the brain power of two powerful forums is a great place to start.

As the president of the European Forum Alpbach, one of Europe's most prestigious intellectual gatherings, Fischler should know. He has also served as Austria's minister of agriculture and as the EU commissioner for agriculture and fisheries.

This year the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference, which will be held from Tuesday to Thursday in South China's Hainan province, will be the first event held in partnership with the Forum Alpbach.

In an exclusive interview with China Daily, Fischler shared his views on the recent visit to Europe by Chinese President Xi Jinping, and explained why the joint forums will help shape the future.

The 2014 Boao Forum, which will feature a keynote address from Chinese Premier LI Keqiang, brings together some of the Asia’s top leaders under the theme "Asia's New Future: Identifying New Growth Drivers."

Among the many dignitaries to be on hand will be Tony Abbott, prime minister of Australia, Korea's Prime Minister Chung Hongwon, and Nawaz Sharif, prime minister of Pakistan.

The European Forum Alpbach, held in Austria, took place for the first time in August 1945 as one of the earliest international political and intellectual events in post-WWII Europe.

According to its official description, more than 4,000 speakers, scholars and experts come to Alpbach to "address the relevant socio-political questions of our time".
