The annual session of China's top legislative body, the National People's Congress, was convened on Wednesday in Beijing with Premier Li Keqiang delivering his first government work report in the Great Hall of the People.

Li reported that China made hard-earned achievements in reforms last year despite increasing downward pressure on economy. He stressed that China must deepen its reforms in education, healthcare and the economy. He said it was essential to maintain stable and sound economic growth in the years to come.

Li also set this year's economic growth target at 7.5 percent, the same as last year's target and slightly lower than the 7.7-percent actual growth in 2013.

Nearly 3,000 NPC deputies from across the country attended the opening meeting along with top Party and state leaders Xi Jinping, Yu Zhengsheng, Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan and Zhang Gaoli.

A silent tribute was observed at the opening meeting for victims of a terrorist attack on Saturday at a train station in southwestern Chinese city of Kunming. During the attack, knife-wielding assailants from Xinjiang killed 29 civilians and injured another 143 people.
